In the city’s early beginnings it was inhabited by the Mdewakanton Dakota, a subtribe of the Dakota Nation around 1700 CE. the Dakota tribe were largely forced out of the area after the Dakota War of 1862, however, their legacy still lives on in the city’s name. Waziya was the Dakota tribe’s word for their god of the north. Wayzata has been through many phases since its humble beginnings and is now known as a large tourist destination during the summers and holds many summer homes for those who only like the warm weather.
